HUNTING FOR HALF DIMES? HALF DIMES: A fascinating series of U.S. coinage which is now extinct. No silver five cent pieces have been minted since 1873*. It is a concise run of about 105 pieces (depending on which varieties one wants to include). Assembling a complete set is a major challenge, yet an attainable goal for one who searches over a period of time. Some collectors attempt the whole series, others from 1829, while some concentrate on the Seated Liberty portion only. Compared with the dimes, quarters, & half dollars of the same era, Half Dimes - as a series - seem to be more attainable & undervalued. For those who relish varieties, the Half Dime series is a rich area, & copies of Valentine's classic United States Half Dimes, Logan & McCloskey's excellent Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837 and Blythe's Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dimes can lead to many exciting discoveries. These books are highly recommended to all Half Dime collectors. *aside from some 35% silver coinage during WWII CURRENT SELECTION OF HALF DIMES 09/07/2007 For coins 1794-1837, LM designations & rarity ratings from Logan & McCloskey.
